STAFFORD - Gerald Rex Hartnett, 88, died of natural causes in his home near Stafford, January 12, 2011. Gerald was born on a farm in Stafford County, the son of Martin and Myrtle Volker Hartnett. He was born on his mother’s birthday, July 16, 1922. Gerald graduated from the rural grade school, Mount Center, and then finished his education at Stafford High School in 1940. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a crew chief on the B-24’s and was discharged as a sergeant. He was a farmer/stockman and was on the crews building many houses in the area. He married the love of his life, Alice Cadman Hartnett, on August 21, 1946, which was Alice’s 20th birthday. They celebrated over 43 years of marriage until Alice’s sudden death, November 27, 1989. To this marriage was born Steve Hartnett and Gerry Ann (Hartnett) Hildebrand, both of Stafford; Kim (Hartnett) Bowker of Rockwall, Texas, and Jack Hartnett of O’Fallon, Missouri. Gerald served his community and church in many ways. He was a lifetime member of the Zenith Community Church, serving as trustee and building chairman. He served many years as Zenith Coop board member and Zenith school board member. He was a past commander of the Stafford American Legion and was active in keeping veteran markers on the Stafford Veterans’ graves. He was active in the American Agriculture Movement. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Norma Williams. Survivors include all four children and their spouses: Jeff Hildebrand, Leroy Bowker, and Kelley Hartnett; grandchildren Joe and Jody (Hildebrand) Michal; John and Jordan Hildebrand; Allison, Taylor, and Jared Bowker; Emily and Rebekah Ford. His first great grandchild is expected in March. Funeral Service will be Saturday January 15, 10:30 a.m. at Minnis Chapel in Stafford, with Pastor Steve Gill presiding. Visitation 1:00-7:00 p.m. and family present 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday at the chapel. Burial will be at Stafford Cemetery. Memorials to the Zenith Church, Stafford American Legion, the Stafford USD#349 Educational Foundation, or a memorial of your choice.
